1891–1892 Seated Liberty/Barber Dime Transition Set G–VG
When the “Barber” Came Calling for Lady Liberty
1891 marked the final year of the Seated Liberty Dime, which began its lengthy run in 1837. But new legislation authorized the changing of the design, and so that same year Charles Barber created a new design, which went from a full-bodied seated Liberty to a simple profile. This new Barber Dime had a much shorter life, being struck for circulation between 1892 and 1916.
Now you can get BOTH coins in this historic 1891–1892 Seated Liberty & Barber Dime Transition Two-Piece Set. Each coin is struck in 2.5 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measure 17.9 mm in diameter. They will also come in Good to Very Good (G–VG) condition:
- The Seated Liberty Dime was designed by Christian Gobrecht, the 3rd Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. It depicts a goddess-like Lady Liberty seated upon a rock holding a Liberty pole topped by a Phrygian Cap of freedom. Gobrecht’s Seated Liberty Dimes were struck for 55 years from 1837 to 1891.
- The Barber Dime was struck from 1892-1916. The classic design was the work of Charles Barber, the U.S. Mint’s 6th Chief Engraver. It features Lady Liberty with her hair tucked up under her cap on the obverse while the reverse shows a wreath and the ONE DIME denomination
