General George H. Thomas... This Note’s For You

Out West in the 19th Century, folks liked carrying big silver dollars around in their pockets. And back East? Not so much. Easterners preferred folding currency like these 1891 Treasury Notes. When the Treasury Department purchased a dollar’s worth of silver bullion, the seller received a note that was redeemable for silver or gold.

A Tribute To The Rock Of Chickamauga

This 1891 $5 Treasury Note features a beautiful, ornate design on the back, and a portrait of General George H. Thomas on the front. Thomas graduated from West Point in 1840 and rose in ranks from lieutenant colonel to general during the Civil War. He saw action in some major battles and was nicknamed “the Rock of Chickamauga” after his defensive stand at the Georgia battle in 1863. Though a slave owner before the war, Thomas’ experience commanding African American soldiers led him to change his views, and he became a staunch defender of civil rights during the Reconstruction Era from 1865 to 1876.
