The Morgan Silver Dollar series enjoyed a remarkably long run from 1878 to 1921, but it faced equally enduring challenges almost from the moment it started production. Government-ordered silver meltdowns, including the 1918 Pittman Act (which alone destroyed 270 million Morgans), seriously depleted supplies. The 1891 mintage from the New Orleans mint totaled over 7.95 million, but most of these coins wore out in circulation or were later melted. As a result, Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has only certified just over 7,100 New Orleans Morgans from 1918 in ANY condition. Designed by George T. Morgan, 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, the obverse of the coin features Lady Liberty facing left with stars circling her head, and is inscribed with the words "LIBERTY," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date 1891. The coin's reverse depicts a soaring eagle, its wings outstretched as it holds an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Also inscribed on the reverse are "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "ONE DOLLAR" and the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST" in archaic lettering, along with the "O" mint mark for the New Orleans mint.
