1891-P Morgan Silver Dollar NGC/PCGS MS63
1891 — The “Original” Last-Year Morgan
First struck in 1878, the Morgan Silver Dollar seemed to be wearing out its welcome by the time the 1890s rolled around. In fact, U.S. Mint officials intended for its final year to be 1891. Congress even authorized the United States Mint to abandon George T. Morgan’s design and strike a new silver dollar. In April, a call went out for new designs. But on June 3rd, a panel that included U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Charles Barber and the great Augustus Saint-Gaudens determined that none of the entries surpassed Morgan’s iconic design. And so, the Morgan Silver Dollar continued to be produced until 1921!
This turn of events happened after western miners and their pet politicians dug in their heels and began a massive push on Congress to force the government to increase federal spending on silver. The arm-twisting worked and 1890 saw a substantial boost in spending — and with it an increased mintage of Morgan Silver Dollars! But the silver-buying bonanza proved to be a one-year fix and a year later in 1891, none of the mintages from the four mints — Carson City, New Orleans, Philadelphia and San Francisco — that struck the coin exceeded 8.6 million. In fact, the mints actually struck 14.4 million FEWER Morgans in 1891 than they did in 1890!
But here’s the good news: We’ve managed to locate a small number of key-date 1891 Morgans from the Philadelphia Mint and we’re making them available while our supply lasts. Not only are these coins struck in 90% fine silver, but each also comes graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63) condition with lots of nice sharp detail — perfect for filling that hole in your collection! Grading service varies.
Arguably the most famous and collected U.S. silver coin of all time, the Morgan Silver Dollar is coveted by collectors the world over.
