1893 Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad Bond Certificate

This beautiful railroad bond comes courtesy of the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway Company. Worth 1,000 shares of the company at the time of its creation, this bond presents an attractive vignette of two female figures flanked by two steam engines. And the time of its creation? 1893 - the year tens of thousands of excited fair-goers boarded their trains on their way to the famous Columbian Exposition held that year in Philadelphia!

Also known as the "Big Four Railroad," the Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railway (CCC&StL) Company transported passengers through Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Ohio. Founded in 1889, the company operated in affiliation with the New York Central system. The railroad corporate offices were headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana in a specially-constructed edifice called the Chesapeake Building. The nine-story structure has since been beautifully restored as a hotel in the heart of the city's Wholesale District. In its heyday, the CCC&StL annually operated 2,391 route-miles and 4,608 track-miles; and carried 8,180 million net ton-miles of revenue freight and 488 million passenger-miles.
