Rare Proof-Like 1893 $5 Gold Liberty
Though 1,528,120 Gold Liberty Half Eagles were originally struck in 1893, this coin is considered to be a rare piece from that mintage. Why? Because of the beautiful Uncirculated Mint State-62 Proof-Like (MS62 PL) grade it has received from the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), that’s why!
Proof-Like coins are sought out by elite collectors both for their excellent eye appeal and because they can be exceptionally hard to find. But finding this elusive Proof-Like 1893 $5 Gold Liberty has proven to be an even greater challenge. In fact, between the combined efforts of NGC and the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), just 413 Proof-Like Gold Liberty coins have received this exalted designation – and that’s across the entire $5 Gold Liberty series struck from 1839 to 1908!
Currently, the Smithsonian® has an MS62 example of the 1893 Gold Liberty coin, but that coin is not in non-Proof-Like condition. Out of more than 1.5 million Gold Liberty coins minted in 1893, PCGS has not certified any to be in Proof-Like condition, and NGC has graded just 49 in Proof-Like condition, with only 18 grading higher than the coin being offered here!
It took a lot of time, effort and luck for us to secure this coin – and it won’t last long. Will you be the one to secure it before your fellow collectors get there first?
