1895 $5 Gold Liberty Coins Minted in 90% Gold
These 1895 $5 Gold Liberty Half Eagles are struck in 90% gold. Designed by Christian Gobrecht and minted from 1839-1908, the $5 Gold Liberty design features Lady Liberty, wearing her hair in a tight bun with a few curls along her neck, a vision of freedom. She wears a Coronet on her head inscribed with the word “Liberty.” The reverse features a proud bald eagle with wings spread and a stars and stripes shield on its breast. The Gold Liberty coins here were minted at the “Mother Mint,” the first U.S. Mint, in Philadelphia.
This golden coin, all 8.359 grams of it, transcended its weight to carry the weight of a nation that saw communities getting involved in improving the nation politically, socially and economically in many ways. The $5 Liberty Gold Half Eagle took part in this growing America, and it echoed the spirit of a country marching towards a brighter horizon.
PCGS Grading & The “+ “Designation
Each coin in the hoard is graded and certified by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), one of the leading third-party coin grading services in the world. In fact, PCGS established a special, distinguishing Reserve+ pedigree for each of these beautiful coins.
The grade of each 1895 $5 Gold Liberty Half Eagle is a remarkable Mint State-62+ (MS62+), which means it is an uncirculated example. Each coin boasts a look of luster and golden freshness, and this hoard exudes beautiful golden color and outstanding eye appeal that have been nicely preserved for well over a century.
In order for PCGS to give a + grade, the coins need to be in the top 30% of all graded coins for eye appeal and overall luster. As you’ll read below, the actual number of coins from the Fairmont Collection is not 30% of all coins graded… it’s not 20%… it’s at less than 1% for the 1895 $5 Gold Liberty coins.

Here’s What Was Going On in the U.S. When these Fairmont Collection Reserve+ Coins Were Minted.
The Fairmont Collection Reserve+ stands as a living testament to the rich history, resilience, and artistic prowess that has defined the United States of America. The coins in this collection were struck from 1880-1907—when growth and changes were transforming the nation. This period covers the Wild West years of Jesse James, Belle Starr, Butch Cassidy and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral. The period was marked by the opening of the Alaskan territory, and by seven states joining the union. Two Presidents were assassinated (Garfield 1881 and McKinley 1901), the Statue of Liberty was dedicated, expansion of the railroads facilitated western expansion, the Spanish-American War started, and ended, Teddy Roosevelt became President, the Wright Brothers conducted the first successful flight in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, and the earthquake and fire of 1906 devastated San Francisco. Just for instance.
This is your chance to secure these gorgeous, quality, vintage gold coins for yourself, for your family and for generations to come.
These Coins Escaped the Gold Recall of 1933
Millions of gold coins were melted during the Gold Recall of 1933. In order to help an economy that was still foundering following the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt signed an executive order known as the Gold Recall of 1933 requiring all Americans to trade in their gold, gold bullion and gold certificates. As a result, millions of gold coins were melted, so nobody knows how many of these $5 Gold Liberty coins still exist today.
President Roosevelt commissioned the construction of Fort Knox in 1935 as a depository for gold. The United States Bullion Depository opened at the Fort Knox U.S. Army Garrison in Kentucky in 1937. This is where the gold coins that were converted to bars ended up.
