Listed as #7 in the book 100 Greatest American Currency Notes by Q. David Bowers, this 1896 $1 Silver Certificate is a genuine treasure. It shows the allegorical figure of History instructing Youth by pointing to an actual readable version of the US Constitution. In the background you can see an image of Washington, D.C. as it looked back in 1896. The other side of the note is also significant since it is the only note that features a husband and wife on it, in this case George and Martha Washington. In-between their images is a large “1” representing the one dollar denomination. This design actually caused controversy since many people thought it was wrong for a husband and wife to be separated by money!
