Rare Proof-Like 1896-S Barber Dime

In all of existence, just five 1896-S Barber Dimes have been certified by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in Proof-Like condition. These rare coin feature blazing luster and crisp details so sharp that these select few coins could almost be considered to be in Proof condition. It’s an incredible honor for any circulating coin and tends to indicate that a coin was struck with very fresh dies.

This rare coin has been certified and graded by NGC as being in Uncirculated Mint State-62 Proof-Like (MS62 PL) condition, meaning that even though this coin wasn’t struck as a proof, its brilliant and reflective finish has earned it a “Proof-Like” designation. What’s more, it also comes from a low mintage of just 575,056 coins. Of that mintage, only four Proof-Like coins have been graded higher by NGC, and just 71 non-Proof-Like coins grade higher by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS).

Struck by the San Francisco Mint when the facility was housed in the Granite Lady that survived the 1906 San Francisco Earthquake, these amazing coins are so rare that PCGS hasn’t certified any in Proof-Like condition, and the National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian® in Washington, D.C. has only a low-grade example in its collection—and that specimen is in just Good-4 (G4) condition!

In the entire Barber Dime series struck from 1892 to 1916, only 54 coins have ever been given a Proof-Like designation. That’s a crazy low number! And of that number, just five coins are 1896-dated Barber Dimes struck at the San Francisco Mint. Don’t miss out on owning this rare beauty.

LEGAL TENDER – These coins were 10 cents legal tender in the United States at a time when a dime could have purchased a loaf of bread or a quart of milk.
