1898-1904-O Morgan Silver Dollar NGC BU 5pc Set Pittman Act Label
Five Surviving Pieces from an Iconic Run
The Morgan Silver Dollar broke new ground in American numismatics, as it marked the first time that Liberty was portrayed as an American figure rather than a Greek one. Although the coins were commonly used in circulation and highly acclaimed by collectors even at the time, only about 15% of all of the Morgan Dollars ever struck survive today. One of the biggest culls was the result of the 1918 Pittman Act, according to which nearly half of the Morgans ever struck were melted. Now, GovMint marks the centennial anniversary of that legislation with this five piece Morgan Silver Dollar Set, which features five pieces from the New Orleans Mint, all of which have been certified Brilliant Uncirculated by NGC.
- A COVETED SOURCE OF ICONIC COINS – Each of the Morgan Silver Dollars in this collection bear the “O” mint mark of the New Orleans Mint. In part because of the mint’s unique history, coins that were struck there are especially prized among collectors.
- NEARLY FOUR OUNCES OF CONSTITUTIONAL SILVER – Each Morgan Dollar was struck from a little over three quarters of an ounce of 90% fine silver. Known as “constitutional silver,” this was the standard of purity for most of American history.
- UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER -- Each Morgan is $1 legal tender in the United States. Although American monetary policy has changed since their issue, the coins retain their face values.
- CERTIFIED BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED -- Your coins will arrive to you in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition, exactly as they left the mint. Just a small fraction of the surviving Morgans remain in this condition.
- A LIMITED OFFER – GovMint.com is offering just 1,000 of these sets to mark the centennial anniversary of the Pittman Act.
The New Orleans Mint has a fascinating history, including its status as the only branch mint to be controlled by three different governments: the United States, the State of Louisiana, and the Confederate States of America. Accordingly, coins from the mint are not simply a part of numismatic history but are in a very real sense an important part of American history. This history combines with the “Old West” appeal of Morgans – hard currency in a world of gun slingers and pioneers in which paper was deemed virtually worthless – to make this set particularly appealing. Add this five piece turn of the century Morgan Silver Dollar Pittman Act set to your collection before it’s too late!
