1899 $5 LIBERTY PCGS MS64+

From the Fairmont Reserve + Collection

Imagine Holding History in Your Hands

Here’s your chance to secure a gorgeous, 1899-P $5 Gold Liberty coin designed by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Christian Gobrecht, from the extraordinary Fairmont Collection Reserve+—consisting of the highest quality coins from the legendary Fairmont Collection, one of the largest hoards of vintage U.S. gold coins ever found.

Magnificent Christian Gobrecht Design

The $5 Gold Liberty features Lady Liberty, wearing her hair in a tight bun with curls along her neck, with a coronet on her head inscribed with the word “LIBERTY.” The reverse features a Bald Eagle with wings spread and a stars-and-stripes shield on its breast.

When merchants conducted business in San Francisco during the Gold Rush, when ranchers bought Montana land, or when bankers financed the transcontinental railroad, the gold coins changing hands were Liberty Eagles. A $2.50 Quarter Eagle might secure a week's provisions, while a $10 Eagle could outfit a family for the trail.

Remarkably High “+” Grades from PCGS

Each coin is authenticated by PCGS and graded with a coveted “+” designation. The “+” designation means the coin has exceptional eye appeal and lists in the top 30% of the grade—in this case, grades of Mint State-64+. Based on the most recent numbers from PCGS, only 1.4% of all coins submitted, regardless of type, have earned a + designation.

THESE HISTORIC GOLD COINS
 ESCAPED

THE 1933 GOLD RECALL

The coins here miraculously survived President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Gold Recall of 1933, requiring all Americans to trade in their gold, gold bullion, and gold certificates as a means of boosting an economy that was still foundering following the Great Depression. The government collected and melted $300 million in gold coins, turning them into gold bars that reside in Fort Knox. As a result, nobody knows how many of these $5 Gold Liberty coins still exist today.

As of late 2023, PCGS had graded almost 6,700 U.S. gold coins from the Fairmont Collection with each coin carrying “The Fairmont Collection” pedigree on their holders. Don’t miss this wonderful chance to own high-grade, pre-1933 U.S. gold coins. Hold American history in the palm of your hands!

MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY EXPLAINED

Ultra High Relief Process Standard coins use relief heights of 0.5mm or less. Ultra High Relief extends this to 1.4mm through specialized dies and multiple high-pressure strikes, creating three-dimensional sculptural effects.

Selective Rose Gold Plating Precision masking allows rose gold application to specific design areas only. The process bonds gold to silver at the molecular level, ensuring permanent adhesion and color stability.

Pulsating Forest Field Technology Microscopic engraving patterns, each measured in fractions of millimeters, cover designated field areas. These patterns interact with light sources to create movement illusions and depth effects.

Reverse Proof Technique Standard proof coins feature mirror-like fields with frosted raised elements. Reverse proofs invert this relationship—frosted fields with polished raised elements—creating enhanced contrast and visual impact.

THE SCARCITY FACTOR

The Royal Canadian Mint produced 8,500 total pieces—a fraction of typical Silver Maple Leaf production numbers. However, the complexity of the manufacturing process meant only a small percentage achieved perfect condition.

Of the 8,500 coins produced, exactly 1,455 received NGC PF70 grading—representing just 17% of total production.

THE MATHEMATICS OF SCARCITY:

  • Total Production: 8,500 coins
  • Perfect NGC PF70 Examples: 1,455 coins
  • Success Rate: 17%
  • Population per North American collector: Approximately 1 coin per 260,000 people

ROYAL CANADIAN MINT HERITAGE

Established in 1908, the Royal Canadian Mint operates from facilities in Ottawa and Winnipeg, producing circulation coins for Canada and numerous other countries. The Silver Maple Leaf program launched in 1988 with 99.99% purity—then the world's highest standard for silver bullion coins.

Walter Ott's maple leaf design became an instant classic, symbolizing both Canadian national identity and the mint's commitment to precious metal purity. Susan Taylor's 2025 resculpting honors the original design while demonstrating current minting capabilities.
