1900 Austria Silver 5 Corona F-VF
Turn-of-the-Century Austria Corona
Who would have thought that when this coin was struck in 1900 it would witness the world descending into the bloody conflagration that was World War I? This turn-of-the-century Austria Corona displays one of the key figures in the lead-up to the war, Austria’s Emperor Franz Josef I, who was also the king of Hungary, Bohemia, and monarch of many other states of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. When his nephew and presumptive heir Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a 19-year-old Serbian separatist, it was the flashpoint that started “The War to End All Wars.”
Struck in 83.5% fine silver, Austria 5-Corona coins like this were struck from 1892-1907. Not only do the coins we have available here come in Fine to Very Fine (F-VF) condition, but these 1900-dated pieces hail from one of the smaller mintages of Coronas ever struck — just 3.745 million. By comparison, 15 million were struck in 1895 and 50 million were struck in 1893, meaning that these key-date coins are just a small fraction of the series’ overall mintage and one of the essential coins collectors look for that were struck on the eve of World War I.
One of the longest reigning monarchs in modern history, Franz Joseph sat upon the throne of Austria for 68 years. But when his nephew was assassinated 14 years after this coin was struck, he declared war on Serbia. This led to Russia joining the fray on Serbia’s side thus activating a system of alliances made between nearly all the nations of Europe which resulted in World War I. Franz Joseph would not live to see the end of the war or the dissolution of the Austria-Hungary Empire, dying at the age of 86 in 1916.
