1903-S 20 Dollar Gold Liberty Type 3 NGC MS62
1903-S $20 Gold Liberty Type 3 NGC MS63
Struck at the fabled San Francisco Mint, this 1903-S $20 Gold Liberty Type 3 coin grades Mint State-62 by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Coins from the San Francisco Mint are especially coveted by gold coin collectors, because it's the mint of the California Gold Rush. San Francisco began striking $20 Gold Double Eagles in 1854. Those coins were the Type I, which had a reverse without the motto 'IN GOD WE TRUST' and spelled the denomination as 'TWENTY D.'
In 1866, the first Type II coins were minted by adding the motto above the reverse eagle, and in 1877, the first Type III coins were struck with the denomination completely spelled out: 'TWENTY DOLLARS.'
This MS62 example from 1903 shows full vibrant mint luster, a strong strike, and a minimal number of contact marks. It will make a superb addition to your collection as part of your 12-piece U.S. Mint Vintage gold Type set or just as an individual coin. San Francisco Mint Double Eagles can be hard to find.
