1904-S 20 Dollar Gold Liberty Type 3 PCGS MS63
1904-S $20 Gold Liberty Type 3 PCGS MS63
Graded Mint State-63 (MS63) by Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), this 1904 San Francisco Mint $20 Gold Liberty Type 3 coin is a highly prized example of the 'Double Eagle' gold coin, the largest denomination gold piece ever struck for circulation by the U.S. Mint.
The coin was originally created as a result of the massive amount of gold flowing into the Philadelphia Mint from the California Gold Rush in 1849, and this example is struck from that same gold rush gold, but a lot closer to the source - just down stream from the American River, where gold was discovered in January of 1848.
The mint only struck $20 Gold Double Eagles at the Philadelphia and San Francisco Mints in 1904. The Philadelphia coin is more common, even though the mintages at both mints were similar. So the pedigree of the 'Gold Rush Mint' makes this coin even more desirable. Even more significant, this 1904-S example grades Mint State-63 (MS63). The numismatic experts at PCGS carefully examined the coin, certified it and graded it in MS63 condition. MS63 is a higher grade of uncirculated coin, with vibrant mint luster, a solid strike and minimal contact marks.
Many collectors prefer this grade as a coin of strong quality and reasonable price. Add this example to your 12-piece Gold Type Set or as a single coin to your collection while it's still available!
