1904-O Morgan
Here is your opportunity to add gorgeous 1904 Morgan Silver Dollars struck at the New Orleans Mint, in gorgeous uncirculated condition, to your collection.
These 1904-O Morgan Silver Dollars aren’t just coins, they’re pieces of history. In 1904, the United States was at the dawn of a new era, marked by significant economic growth, industrialization, and cultural developments. President Teddy Roosevelt, running for a second term, won election versus Democratic candidate Alton B. Parker. The U.S. began construction of the Panama Canal, a monumental engineering undertaking and a significant achievement for global trade. The Olympics were held in St. Louis as part of the World's Fair, marking the first time the Games were held outside Europe. And several national parks and monuments were added to the growing National Park System, including Crater Lake National Park in Oregon, and Devils Tower National Monument in Wyoming.
The Most Popular Vintage Silver Dollar in the World…
The Morgan Silver Dollar, struck from 1878 to 1904, then again in 1921, is easily the most popular vintage Silver Dollar today, 145 years after its first minting. That’s in part because of the coin’s beautiful, iconic designs, and in part because of the role it played during exciting, turbulent, and significant periods of American history—the coin that helped build the Old West.
…Yet, It’s a Wonder Any Morgan Silver Dollars Still Exist!
After 1904, the year these coins were struck, there was a hiatus in minting Silver Dollars because demand was low, and the bullion supply was exhausted. Then in 1918, Congress passed the Pittman Act. That Act authorized the melting of a vast sum of Morgan Silver Dollars to send to Great Britain to help that country during World War I. According to U.S. Mint records, 259,121,554 Silver Dollars were melted, nearly half of the entire mintage of Morgans up to that time!
Another mass melting occurred during World War II, when the Silver Act of 1942 resulted in the melting of another 53 million+ Silver Dollars. Coin experts estimate that fewer than 15% of all Morgans, in any condition, still exist. Yet more people collect Morgan Silver Dollars than at any other time. All this means locating Morgans in good condition gets more and more difficult with each passing day.
A Revered Design
Lady Liberty graces the coin’s obverse, her regal profile exuding strength, liberty, and independence. A radiant crown sits atop her head, and her locks flow freely, symbolizing the triumph of a nation on the rise. Flip to the coin’s reverse to see a majestic eagle standing tall, wings outstretched, holding an olive branch and arrows. The intricate details of this emblematic American bird evoke a sense of pride and patriotism that echoes through time.
Minted at the Historic New Orleans Mint
The Morgans here were struck in New Orleans and have the “O” mint mark. One of the three original branch mints, New Orleans was the country’s second most important mint (behind the Philadelphia Mint) from the time it struck its first coin in 1838, until the early 1860s when the Civil War changed everything. In early 1861, the New Orleans Mint was seized and fell under the control of the Confederate States of America, and began striking U.S. coins for use by the Confederacy. Once the war ended, the mint was closed, presumably for good. But subsequent silver discoveries created a need for more capacity, and the New Orleans facility sprang to life in 1879, until it closed for good in 1909.
A Key-Date Morgan Silver Dollar
Collectors especially covet first and last year issues from any series. Since 1904 was the last year a silver dollar rolled off the presses at the historic New Orleans Mint, these coins represent a key date in the Morgan Silver Dollar series.
