1909 VDB Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Cent VF
After fifty years of the storied Indian Head Cent serving as our nation's smallest 'pocket change' coin, and with the 100th anniversary of the birth of Abraham Lincoln fast approaching, the mint decided to replace the Indian cent with a cent commemorating Lincoln in 1909. Famed sculptor Victor David Brenner was commissioned to design the new coin.
Brenner's original design had his full surname included on the coin, but as a compromise, only his initials 'V.D.B.' appeared on the final design. These were placed beneath the wheat ears on the reverse.
The first examples of the Lincoln Cent in 1909 possessed the artist Victor D. Brenner's initials. Public outcry prompted the removal of the initials on future cents, and in as a result, the first variety coins are scarcer today.
This 1909 Lincoln Cent from the Philadelphia Mint is the first variety. This coin is in Very Fine (VF) condition. Obtain it for your collection today!
