These Barbers Suffered From Depression!

The first Barber Quarter was struck in 1892. The very next year, the country sank into a major depression. It didn’t end until the United States entered World War I one year after the last Barber was minted. The result? Nearly all Barber Quarters were spent over and over again, wearing down each time. Very few were saved. That's why it’s so hard to find Barbers in nice condition today. Here we have a 1909-dated Barber in nice Fine+ (F+) condition that was struck at the Denver Mint!

Charles Barber’s Popular Quarter Design

Barber Quarters are the coins that jingled in pockets more than 100 years ago and were last struck 16 years before the creation of the first Washington Quarter. Perhaps that’s why so many people don’t even know these coins ever existed! These coins get their name from their designer, Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint. The obverse features a bust of Lady Liberty with a triple headdress—a cap, a laurel wreath and a tiny coronet inscribed with her name. Struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, these coins are a great find. Most circulated heavily and were worn down or melted for their silver content during times of high silver values. Now you can get one of these popular coins that was struck at the fabled Denver Mint! Click one to your cart today!
