Created at the request of President ÂTheodore Roosevelt and struck from 1908 to 1916 and again in 1929, each coin was struck in 8.359 grams of highly pure 90% fine gold and features a unique incuse relief design. Millions of $5 Gold Indian coins were melted in 1933 after President Franklin D. Roosevelt recalled gold coins from the public.
