1915-S 50 Cents Panama Pacific Silver Commemorative XF-AU
Struck to Celebrate the Panama Canal
In August of 1914, the engineering marvel that is the Panama Canal was officially complete. To celebrate, the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 was held in San Francisco – a city that had been devastated by an earthquake just nine years prior. To help raise funds, various denominations of coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint and sold at the expo – including this 90% silver commemorative half dollar!
These Panama Pacific Half Dollars are among the most popular and acclaimed of all the U.S. Mint’s silver half-dollar commemoratives. Its remarkable designs were the work of two of the most famous coin designers in U.S. history: Charles Barber and George T. Morgan. Barber is credited with the coin’s obverse of Lady Columbia while Morgan designed the coin’s eagle-themed reverse. The coin also has a unique fun fact that collectors love: The words “IN GOD WE TRUST” that appeared on the reverse represent the motto’s first appearance on a U.S. commemorative coin.
Just 200,000 of these half-dollars were struck and they were to be sold for a dollar apiece. Unfortunately, just 27,134 were sold and the remaining inventory was melted down, leaving precious few for today’s collectors. Fortunately for you, we have a small supply in Extremely Fine to About Uncirculated (XF-AU) condition. Grade varies.
