Not All Saints Are Created Equal
The Theodore Roosevelt-inspired, Saint-Gaudens-created $20 Gold Double Eagle is one of the most collected gold coins of all time. It's nearly an ounce of gold, which has a high intrinsic value. It's one of the most beautiful coins ever designed, which creates strong collector interest. It shows Miss Liberty striding forward, torch and olive branch in hand in front of the capitol, with a majestic eagle flying in front of the sun on the reverse. But some "Saints" are a bit more desired than others, like these 1920 Philadelphia Mint coins graded Mint State-64+ (MS64+) by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). Each is from the fabulous Rive d'Or Hoard of U.S. Gold found hidden in a bank vault in Paris, France. No one knows how many have been melted since the Roaring Twenties. Add in that not many of these survived in uncirculated grades and you'll understand that buying these coins now gives you an enduring prize and family heirloom to pass down from generation to generation.
