1921 Morgan Silver Dollar Zerbe PCGS SP63
This Special Morgan Was Struck For Just One Man
Farran Zerbe was a numismatic writer and coin collector who served as the president of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) from 1908-1910. He had an extensive collection of more than 50,000 coins and was friends with several highly influential members of the federal government. In fact, his experience and connections in the coin world led to his appointment as head of the Panama Pacific Exposition’s Official Coin and Medal Department in 1915, which included production of the popular $50 Pan-Pac coins.
Zerbe was such an important figure that when the U.S. Mint failed to release the 1921 Peace Silver Dollar on time, it made a special apology to Zerbe. Apparently, the tireless Zerbe had spent a lot of time promoting the 1921 Peace Dollar and wanted to have examples of the coin to display at the ANA’s annual World’s Fair of Money Show scheduled that summer in Boston. Officials at the U.S. Mint felt so bad about not meeting the deadline for the Peace Dollar that they allegedly struck a small mintage of Special Strike 1921 Morgan Silver Dollars and gave them directly to Zerbe for his trouble! While coin experts still debate Zerbe’s role in the creation of the Peace Dollar, there’s no doubt that the U.S. Mint struck a small run of Morgan Silver Dollars that are now and forever known as “Zerbe Proofs.”
Struck with polished dies but standard circulation-type planchets, this estimated mintage of between 100-to-125 coins display more hairlines compared to coins struck for circulation but are not quite on par with the early Proof versions of the Morgan Silver Dollar.
Think of how important a person must be for the U.S. Mint to strike a special mintage of Specimen-grade coins for them just as a way of saying “sorry!” It’s a story quite unlike any other, and now you can own one of these legendary pieces graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Specimen-63 (SP63) condition. Your fellow collectors will hardly believe you when you say you managed to snag yourself a Zerbe!
- SPECIALLY-STRUCK FINAL-YEAR MORGAN – The Morgan Silver Dollar was struck from 1878-1904 and again for one last time in 1921. A very special group of coins were struck in 1921 for Joseph Farran Zerbe, past president of the American Numismatic Association (ANA) and one of the most influential figures in the coin industry at that time. The coins were struck on special polished dies, but on normal circulation planchets therefore creating this Specimen (SP) designation.
- STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – These special Zerbe Morgan Proofs were struck in 90% silver.
- LEGAL-TENDER COINAGE – Each 1921 Morgan Zerbe Proof is $1 legal tender.
- FANTASTIC HIGH GRADE – Your 1921-P Morgan Silver Dollar Zerbe Proof has been certified and graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) to be in Specimen-63 (SP63) condition.
- EXCEPTIONALLY SCARCE COIN TREASURE –Experts estimate that fewer than 150 of these specially-struck 1921 Morgans were ever produced – far too few for the millions of Morgan collectors who would like one.
One of the rarest of all Morgan Silver Dollars, the 1921 Morgan “Zerbe” Proof can be yours in PCGS Specimen-63 condition – but only if you secure it now!
