1921-S Morgan Silver Dollar AU
Last in a Series – Vintage Morgan Silver Dollar
The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most revered coins in history, loved the world over. This is the coin that your father or grandfather most likely carried, and hundreds of millions of these coins were minted in the years between 1878 and 1921. Now, however, they're becoming true treasures for the discerning collector, especially coins like the ones offered through GovMint.com in "About Uncirculated" condition.
Why? Because though this was one of the most robust coin series in U.S. history, hundreds of millions were melted down nearly a hundred years ago - and many more have been worn down in circulation. The Pittman Act of 1918 sent more than 270 million Morgan Silver Dollars - nearly half the entire mintage - to the melting pots. In subsequent decades, international financial turbulence prompted many silver stackers to melt their remaining stock as well. All of that destruction leads to scarcity, and respected numismatist and author Q. David Bowers estimates that as low as 15% of all original Morgan Silver Dollars still exist today in any condition…and far fewer exist in About Uncirculated grades.
But, now is your chance to own a coin minted in the last year of this historic series, struck in .900 fine silver at the San Francisco Mint. It's a robust coin, weighing a hefty 26.73 grams and measuring 38.1 mm in diameter - and its size showcases its beautiful imagery. The obverse was designed by George T. Morgan, the 7th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint - and this design was his most famous. It features the bust of Lady Liberty with stars circling her head, as well as the inscriptions "LIBERTY," "E PLURIBUS UNUM" and the date "1921." The reverse features an eagle with wings outspread, clutching an olive branch and arrows in its talons. Surrounding the eagle are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and "ONE DOLLAR," and surmounting the eagle, in archaic lettering, is the phrase "IN GOD WE TRUST." The mark "S" is also present on the coin, indicating its mintage at the San Francisco Mint.
The 1921 Morgan Silver Dollar is presented in About Uncirculated condition, which means this beautiful coin will show its full detail, with limited friction on its high points. Even better, with its last-in-series mintage year, it's a collector's must-have…and this piece of history can be yours from GovMint.com if you act today!
