Superior Quality Green Label 1923 Peace Dollars
What luck! We recently came across a small hoard of 1923 Peace Dollars in amazing, never-been circulated condition. This series was struck for just 10 years between 1921 and 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. The last true 90% fine silver dollar struck by the United States Mint for circulation, it was an important sign of our victory in World War I and the peace that victory brought.
Peace Dollars From The Mother Mint
These Peace Dollars were struck at the "Mother Mint" in Philadelphia the same year the Hollywood sign was inaugurated and the year the Yankees played their first home game in the old stadium. The Philadelphia Mint's production of 1923 Peace Dollars also represents the second largest mintage of the series. But due to numerous melts of 1923 and in the years that followed, the number of remaining coins is significantly less than when they were issued. According to respected numismatist Q. David Bowers, as few as 16% of all Peace Dollars ever struck exist today
A Symbol of Peace For The Ages
The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by 33-year-old Italian-American sculptor Anthony De Francisci, who used his wife, Teresa Cafarelli, as his model for Lady Liberty. The design presents Lady Liberty wearing a crown of rays on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle holding the olive branches of peace, rather than the typical olive branches and arrows of war. The coin's original reverse showed an eagle breaking a sword to symbolize disarmament at the end of the war. Mint officials were concerned this depiction would signify defeat and had the sword removed. The result was a beautiful symbol of peace for the ages!
