These Peace Dollars were struck at the "Mother Mint" in Philadelphia the same year the Hollywood sign was inaugurated and the year the Yankees played their first home game in the old stadium. The Philadelphia Mint's production of 1923 Peace Dollars also represents the second largest mintage of the series. But due to numerous melts of 1923 and in the years that followed, the number of remaining coins is significantly less than when they were issued. According to respected numismatist Q. The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by 33-year-old Italian-American sculptor Anthony De Francisci, who used his wife, Teresa Cafarelli, as his model for Lady Liberty. The coin's original reverse showed an eagle breaking a sword to symbolize disarmament at the end of the war.
