This series was struck for just 10 years between 1921 and 1928, and again in 1934 and 1935. The Designer Of America’s Fabled Peace Dollar

The Peace Silver Dollar was designed by 33-year-old Italian-American sculptor Anthony De Francisci, who used his wife, Teresa Cafarelli, as his model for Lady Liberty. The design presents Lady Liberty wearing a crown of rays on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle holding the olive branches of peace, rather than the typical olive branches and arrows of war. The coin's original reverse showed an eagle breaking a sword to symbolize disarmament at the end of the war. Mint officials were concerned this depiction would signify defeat and had the sword removed. The result was a beautiful symbol of peace for the ages!

Low-Mintage San Francisco Mint Peace Dollars

These Peace Dollars were struck at the San Francisco Mint the same year the Hollywood sign was inaugurated and the year the Yankees played their first home game in the old stadium. And, while the “Mother Mint” in Philadelphia struck 30,800,000 of 1923’s Peace Dollars, the San Francisco Mint struck just 19,020,000—only about a third of ALL Peace Dollars struck that year!
