Remarkably High “+” Grades from PCGS

The “+” designation means the coin has exceptional eye appeal and lists in the top 30% of the grade—in this case, grades of Mint State-63+ and Mint State-64+. Based on the most recent numbers from PCGS, only 1.4% of ALL coins submitted—regardless of type—have earned a + designation!

These Historic Gold Coins Escaped the Gold Recall of 1933
The $20 Gold Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle coins were the final $20 denomination coins ever struck by the U.S. Mint. Their stunning Saint-Gaudens masterpiece design was created at the specific request of President Teddy Roosevelt, who demanded an upgrade to previous American coinage that was in his words, “artistically of hideous atrociousness.”
The coins here also survived President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s Gold Recall of 1933, requiring all Americans to trade in their gold, gold bullion and gold certificates as a means of boosting an economy that was still foundering following the Great Depression. The government collected and melted $300 million in gold coins, turning them into gold bars that reside in Fort Knox. As a result, nobody knows how many of these $20 Saint-Gaudens Gold Double Eagle coins still exist today.
