1929 Series Federal Reserve National Bank Note 5-pc Set Fine
The Nationals Aren’t Just D.C.’s Baseball Team!
The stock market crash of 1929 was the worst decline in United States history and plunged America into the Great Depression, an economic downtown that would last another 10 years. At the height of the Depression, bank failures were all-too common and public hoarding of cash proved to be a major problem. In response, President Franklin D. Roosevelt closed all the banks for three days in early March of 1933 to stop a banking panic. The Treasury Department feared that once the banks reopened a mad dash for cash would suck all available bank notes out of the economy. To counter this threat, Federal Reserve Banks were authorized for a limited time to issue as many notes as they saw fit – essentially government-backed IOUs to keep the economy from collapsing!
The First Small-Sized Federal Reserve National Bank Notes
Besides being unique emergency currency, these were the first small-sized Federal Reserve National Bank Notes ever issued. Even more interesting, this Depression-era currency was printed using the existing stock of National Bank Note blanks from the Series of 1929. They were overprinted by a single logotype plate for each of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks – Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Cleveland, Richmond, Atlanta, Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, Minneapolis, Dallas, and San Francisco. Federal Reserve Bank Notes differ Federal Reserve Notes in that they are backed by one of these 12 Federal Reserve Banks rather than by all national banks collectively. Though dated 1929, these amazing Federal Reserve Bank Notes were issued at the height of the Great Depression in 1933 and are a key part of any currency buff’s collection
