1931 Silver Mercury Dime F–VF
The U.S. Mint’s Reaction to the Great Depression
The Liberty Dime— affectionately known to many collectors as a “Mercury” — is undoubtedly one of the most fabulous coins ever struck by the U.S. Mint. In fact, the Mercury Dime Liberty obverse is so iconic and beloved that it was resurrected in 2017 as the obverse for today’s Palladium Eagles!
Adolph Weinman’s Beloved Design
Designed by sculptor Adolph A. Weinman, the Winged Head Liberty Dime was issued from 1916-1945. In the century since it was first issued, it has become almost exclusively referred to as the Mercury Dime and has gone on to become one of America’s most beloved coins. Its iconic design bears it namesake: an image of Lady Liberty with a winged Phrygian cap that makes her look like the Roman god Mercury. The coin’s reverse depicts a fasces, symbolizing unity and strength, and an olive branch, signifying peace.
Depression-Era Silver That Escaped the Melting Pots
Issued in 1931 at a time with America was deep in the throes of the Great Depression, this Mercury Dime circulated heavily in commerce at a time when “Brother, Can You Spare a Dime?" was one of the best-known songs of the era. What started as an ordinary recession created a ripple effect of wide scale homelessness, food shortages and bank closures. In retrospect, the Great Depression was one of the most devastating events of the 20th Century. The U.S. Mint slowed coin production in 1931 and only three coins were issued: the 1931-S Lincoln Cent, 1931-S Buffalo Nickel and a 1931-S Mercury Dime. No coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint during 1932 and 1933, then the U.S. Mint resumed production in 1934.
