445,500 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles Were Struck, then Destroyed. Or Were They?
The full run of these gorgeous coins, with Lady Liberty on the obverse and a flying Eagle on the reverse, were struck in 1933, but were never released due to an executive order from President Franklin D. Roosevelt requiring gold to be surrendered to the federal government.
Following the May 1 deadline, most of the 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles were melted down and turned into bullion bars. But not all of them. Two were given to the U.S. National Numismatic Collection at the Smithsonian®. For many years, those two coins were thought to be the only two legal 1933 Double Eagles in existence. By 1952, the secret service had confiscated eight other coins and a prevailing theory of the time was that a cashier smuggled 20 Double Eagles out of the Philadelphia Mint. One of those smuggled coins found its way into the collection of King Farouk I of Egypt. Since it had been legally exported, the Secret Service wasn’t able to recover the coin until 40 years after the king was deposed, in 1952. They got the coin back in a sting operation targeting a British coin dealer and his buyer. During the ensuing years of litigation between the dealer and government, the coin was held in the Treasury Vaults at the World Trade Center. The case was finally settled, and the coin was moved to storage at Fort Knox in Kentucky…shortly before it would have wound up likely destroyed in the rubble and collapse of Tower 2 during the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.
The Most Valuable Coin in the World
This rare coin ended up selling at auction in 2002 for $7.590 million, which made it the most valuable coin in the world at that time. On June 8th, 2021 the Farouk-Weitzman 1933 Saint Gaudens coin went up for auction and sold for a whopping $18,872,250 million.
The Original Saint-Gaudens Coin Sculptures Had a Dual Ultra High Relief Design
Saint-Gaudens sculpted his iconic 1907 Double Eagle in ultra-high relief (UHR), not only on the reverse, flying Eagle side, but also on the obverse, featuring Saint-Gaudens momentous Standing Liberty design. The first few coins were struck in that level of relief, but the U.S. Mint did not have the technology to strike coins that detailed with any kind of speed or efficiency. So, the design was quickly altered to standard relief, which though still beautiful, is less impressive than original.
No Expense Spared in Designing these Commemorative UHR Proofs
In honor of the 1933 Gold U.S. Double Eagle and its incredible story, the National Park Foundation (NPF) authorized the creation of these special proof commemoratives with no expense spared. The Foundation worked with the Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park to gain access to the original 1907 Augustus Saint-Gaudens plasters, and none other than the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint John Mercanti was brought on to recreate the iconic, original eagle reverse design. Working in partnership with artists at the prestigious Commonwealth Mint who worked on the obverse Liberty design, Mercanti recreated the Augustus Saint-Gaudens designs from the original 1933 Double Eagle design in vast detail, and in ultra-high relief, on both sides.

Breathtaking Reverse Proof Finish
Beyond the ultra-high relief, each commemorative has been struck with a reverse proof finish, carrying all the benefits of a traditional proof coin – multiple strikes, clean, sharp designs, frosted and polished finishes – but literally reversed. Instead of the typical polished fields and frosted devices, these medals feature frosted backgrounds and the polished elements. The result is a stunning effect, particularly when combined with an UHR strike.

Mercanti-Signed Augustus Saint-Gaudens Labels
Each Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle Ultra High Relief Reverse Proof has been sealed by NGC with an Augustus Saint-Gaudens themed label, hand-signed by designer/sculptor and 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, John Mercanti. In his tenure, Mercanti went on to set a U.S. Mint record by creating and engraving more than 100 coin and medal designs—more than any other engraver in mint history. He is perhaps more experienced and accomplished than any other U.S. Mint engraver.
NGC Certified First Day of Issue and Flawless PF70
Each of these 1933 Saint-Gaudens Proofs has been certified by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), one of the world’s top third-party grading services, as flawless Proof-70 (PF70) condition, as well as First Day of Issue (FDI), which means they were purchased within one day of the first day the mint struck this new release. Collectors seek out FDI proofs as they’re considered to be well-stuck proofs produced with new dies and because the population of FDI proofs is a very small fraction of the total mintage. These medals are not only the best of the best, they’re also the first of the best!
Extremely Limited Mintages
These 1933 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles UHR Reverse Proofs are extremely limited. Only 299 struck in one ounce gold, only 999 struck in ten ounce silver and only 1933 struck in three ounce silver were authorized, and even fewer have been certified by NGC as flawless PF70 and FDI.
