The Peace Dollar Makes a “Comeback”

When the Peace Silver Dollar was first struck in 1921, it was meant as a one-year-only issue to celebrate the end of World War I. But its beautiful design made it incredibly popular, and the U.S. Mint continued to strike the coin. That is, until the Great Depression hit in 1929. For several years, no Peace Dollars were minted. But then came President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s New Deal, and with it came the ability to strike these enduring 90% silver symbols of freedom and peace once more.

A Symbol of Economic Recovery

In 1934, after a six-year hiatus, the Peace Dollar made a “comeback,” enjoying two more years of minting. The issuing of this big silver coin was more than just adding a dollar to the nation’s circulating coinage, it also represented a key moment in America’s history. The first silver dollar struck following the stock market crash of 1929, the 1934 Peace Silver Dollar was FDR’s way of announcing to the country that America’s economy was making a comeback and was on the path to recovery.

You can secure one or more of these key-date 1934 “Comeback” Silver Dollars in Circulated condition. Plus, each coin comes in a folder with a story on the coin’s resurrection.

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • FAMOUS PEACE SILVER DOLLAR – While not produced in the same numbers as the Morgan Silver Dollar, the Peace Silver Dollar series has seen its reputation grow with each passing year. Designed by Anthony de Francisci, it features a design of Lady Liberty on the obverse and a perched eagle on the reverse. It was struck from only 1921 to 1928 and again in 1934 and 1935.
  • KEY DATE “COMEBACK” – This coin as struck in 1934, marking a “comeback” for the Peace Silver Dollar, which hadn’t been struck since 1928—a six-year hiatus.
  • STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – Each Peace Silver Dollar was struck in 26.73 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measures 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • LEGAL TENDER U.S. COINAGE – These coins were $1 legal tender in the United States and circulated widely during the Roaring ’20s and Depression-era ’30s.
  • PEACE DOLLARS BECOMING SCARCE – Placed directly into circulation, most Peace Silver Dollars are heavily worn. Hundreds of thousands of these classic coins were melted during the “Great Melting Pot” of 1980 when silver hit $50 an ounce. The ensuing carnage decreased the known number of surviving Peace Dollars.
