1937 Walking Liberty Half Dollar

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar design has long been considered to exemplify the spirit and pride of America. In fact, the design is deemed so “American,” it was chosen for the American Silver Eagle series that launched in 1986. The obverse depicts Miss Liberty walking toward the sun, striding eastward toward war-torn Europe, with a starry cape behind. The reverse portrays an eagle facing left with wings outspread, perched on a rocky crag from which grows a pine branch, a symbol of strength These Half Dollars, struck in 90% silver, will arrive in Extremely Fine (XF) condition, but supplies are limited, so act now!

A Staple Of American History

Struck in highly pure 90% fine silver, this coin is affectionately known to many collectors as a “Walker.” With its iconic images, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar is surely one of the most beautiful coins ever struck by the United States Mint. Struck from 1916 to 1947, it shows Lady Liberty is shown striding towards the sun, her right hand open and outstretched as if in invitation. In her left arm is a bouquet of olive branches. The coin’s reverse depicts a stylistic eagle standing on a rock ready to take flight. A mountain pine sapling springs from the rock, symbolizing America. Famously designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty is so iconic and beloved that it was resurrected in 1986 as the obverse for today’s Silver Eagles! This patriotic design always proved difficult to strike, meaning that finding circulated specimens in nice condition can be difficult.

Nice Walkers Can Be Difficult To Find

This patriotic design always proved difficult to strike, however, meaning that finding circulated specimens in nice condition can be difficult. In addition, many Walking Liberty Half-Dollars wore out in circulation or were thrown into the melting pots for their precious silver. The simple ravages of time over the past 75 years since the last Walkers were struck has also reduced the number of coins available to today’s collectors.

The United States In 1937

Some of the major events of 1937 when this coin was struck include the mysterious disappearance over the Pacific Ocean of aviator Amelia Earhart during her planning flight to circumnavigate the globe. Chicago was the site of much news hosting the opening of the first blood bank and as well as witnessing the famous Memorial Day Massacre when 10 union demonstrators are killed when police open fire on union protesters. Aviator and Millionaire Howard Hughes broke his own transcontinental flight speed record when he flew from Los Angeles to Newark in 7 hours, 28 minutes, and 25 seconds averaging 332 miles per hour along the 2,490-mile flight. 1937 also saw the official opening of San Francisco’s iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

The Walking Liberty Half Dollar exemplifies American spirit and pride. Every collector should have one of these big, beautiful coins in their collection. Here’s a perfect opportunity to launch yourself on a collecting journey or to get a young collector started in the hobby. This coin may be a “Walker,” but you’ll want to run to get one!
