The Last of an American Classic
Its proper name is the “Indian Nickel,” but the reverse won out, and the name “Buffalo Nickel” stuck. They were first released into circulation in 1913 and endured the test of time with a rugged Wild West design. Unfortunately, the supply is becoming more scarce and harder to find every day, including this key-date last-year-of-issue 1938 Buffalo Nickel struck at the Denver Mint.
Recently we were lucky enough to acquire a number of 1938-D Buffalo Nickels and are making them available now while supplies last. Even luckier, each comes in gleaming in Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) condition as fresh and crisp as the day they left the Denver Mint more than eight decades ago.
Created by famed American sculptor James Earle Fraser, the Buffalo Nickel was popular throughout its run thanks to its uniquely and unequivocally American designs. The Indian depicted on the coin is a dead ringer for Oglala Lakota Chief Iron Tail – though Fraser claimed it was a composite of three men in order to protect both the Chief’s privacy and his own artistic license. The American bison on the reverse was directly related to the obverse design as buffalos were an important symbol for many Native Americans. The buffalo was modeled after Black Diamond, a large American bison then on display at the Bronx Zoo in New York City not far from Fraser’s studio.
