These Philadelphia Mint Wheat-Back Cents Are, Well, Red!
For many collectors, the Wheat-Back Cent was the first coin that caught their eye. While it featured Victor D. Brenner’s iconic design of President Abraham Lincoln on the obverse, the reverse wasn’t the Lincoln Memorial — it was the coins’ denomination, surrounded by a pair of wheat stalks. This discovery opened up a world of collecting possibilities. What other coins existed that we didn’t know about, and how could we get our hands on them? Here’s a chance to give another new collector (perhaps even yourself!) that same joy by securing this 1940 Lincoln Wheat-Back Cent struck by the Philadelphia Mint.
Impressive Gem Uncirculated Condition
Millions of collectors began with this version of the Lincoln Cent, which was retired in 1958. Rarely seen in circulation from any mint, this 1940-P Lincoln Wheat-Back Cent has been graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in incredible Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 (MS66) condition, meaning it features its full original luster, above average eye appeal and no hairlines or other imperfection visible to the naked eye.
Beautiful “Red” Designation
Additionally, NGC has certified it as a Red (RD) copper penny, a designation that really locks down its status as a high-grade coin. A Red designation is applied only to high-grade copper pennies that retain at least 95 percent of their original red color on their surfaces. When copper coins are first struck, they have a brilliant reddish-orange color. Over time that red color will begin to turn brown. The color of vintage pennies and other copper coins is graded on a continuous scale of Red (RD), Red Brown RB) and Brown (BN).
