On December 7, 1941 America was thrust into World War II following the Japanese surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. For the next four years, everyday life across the country was dramatically altered. Food, gas and clothing were rationed. A postage stamp would have cost you 3 cents, a minimum-wage job paid 30 cents an hour, and -- when you could find it and had enough ration coupons -- gasoline was 19 cents a gallon. Money was tight.
