1944-1945-S Philippines 50 Cent Silver BU
Struck for the Philippines… in San Francisco?
Following the Spanish-American War, the Philippines islands became a United States possession from 1898 to 1945. So, when Japan invaded the territory on December 8, 1941 – just 10 hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor – it continued the early string of dramatic and sudden victories for Japanese Imperial forces over an unprepared America. The Japanese occupation of the Philippines lasted for nearly three years and was fiercely combatted by Filipino resistance forces supplied by U.S. General Douglas MacArthur.
Throughout World War II, U.S. and Japanese forces fought over the Filipino islands. During the earliest days of the fighting the Manila Mint was heavily damaged and when Japanese forces occupied the city they seized much of the coinage and melted it down for their own uses. The Manila Mint continued to sustain damage throughout the war until the city was finally liberated in 1945. In preparation for the expected liberation, all U.S. branch mints began striking denominations of Philippines coinage from the 1 Centavo through 50 Centavos – but only the San Francisco Mint struck the 50 Centavos coins.
Minted from only 1944 to 1945, these Philippines 50 Centavos coins are authentic pieces of World War II history. Each was struck in 75% silver and has a Spanish denomination on the reverse and “The United States of America” on the obverse! The coins available in this offer are all dated 1945 and are in sumptuous Brilliant Uncirculated condition! These fascinating and unique coins are true artifacts of the Second World War and belong in the collection of every coin collector and history buff. Add one to your cart today!
- UNIQUE SPANISH DENOMINATION COIN STRUCK BY THE SAN FRANCISCO MINT – The obverse of this coin shows the FIFTY CENTAVOS denomination framing an image of a Filipino Lady Liberty striking an anvil with a hammer while an active volcano sends out a plume of smoke in the background. The reverse bears the UNTED STATES OF AMERICA, year date and Philippines shield with eagle.
- AUTHENTIC PIECE OF WWII HISTORY – These coins were struck to replace coinage confiscated by Japan during its occupation of the Philippines. Because the Manilla Mint has been so badly damaged during three years of conflict, The San Francisco Mint struck the coins for the Philippines, which at that time was still a territory of the United States.
- STRUCK IN FINE SILVER – Each Philippines 50 centavos coin is struck in 10 gm of 75% fine silver.
- LEGAL TENDER COINAGE – Even though your 1945-S Philippines 50 Centavos coin was struck in the United States at the San Francisco Mint, it was legal tender in the Philippines.
- BRILLIANT UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Despite being more than 70 years old, your coin comes in Brilliant Uncirculated condition, meaning it looks as fresh and crisp as the day it left the San Francisco Mint coin presses during World War II.
This 1945-S Philippines 50 Centavos coin in Brilliant Uncirculated condition is an easy and affordable way to add a genuine piece of World War II history to your collection. Why wait, order yours today!
