1944 Canadian Deer Quarter

Just as many collectors seek out different dates of the United States Washington Quarter, people also collect the various dates of the Canadian 25-Cent piece and its wildlife-themed Caribou design that appears on the coin’s reverse. We recently secured a small hoard of 40 of these Canadian “Deer” Quarters struck in 1944 during World War, and now you can take advantage of our good fortune to start or add to your Canadian Quarter collection!

Royal Scandal Paves Way for Caribou Design

Minted in 80% fine silver, this coin features an obverse of King George VI, father of the current Queen of England, Elizabeth II. The image of the caribou was first used on the Canadian Quarter in 1937, coming about due to a crisis in the monarchy. The design was prompted after Edward VIII abdicated the throne in 1936 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Whenever a new monarch is crowned, the effigy on the coins of the realm must change to reflect the new royal. The Royal Canadian Mint took advantage of this development to create a new design for its quarters. The caribou design was created by Canadian artist Emanuel Hahn and has been used ever since with only temporary one-year-only replacements honoring significant Canadian anniversaries.

While 7.216 million were struck, there’s no way to know how many have survived the rigors of circulation or escaped the melting pot. Your coin will arrive in Very Fine to Extremely Fine (VF–XF) condition. Order yours now!
