The United States In 1944

Many of the major events of 1944 when this coin was struck are related to America’s involvement in World War II with the most significant event occurring on June 6, 1944. Known as D-Day, it was the launch of Operation Overlord and the Allied invasion of Europe on the beaches of Normandy. U.S. forces landed on Omaha and Utah beaches and helped establish a beachhead. By August, Allied forces liberated Paris from Nazi occupation and began driving towards the Rhine River and the heart of Germany. Popular big band leader Glenn Miller was reported missing in late 1944. He had volunteered for military service to entertain troops and was assigned to the U.S. Army Air Forces. On December 15, 1944, while flying to Paris, Miller’s aircraft disappeared in bad weather over the English Channel. He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star Medal. Also that year Franklin D. Roosevelt won re-election to become the only U.S. president to be elected to a fourth term. The G.I. Bill of Rights was passed, and the average cost of a new house was listed at $3,450.
