Adolf A. Weinman's Iconic Design Struck In Gleaming Silver
Designed by Adolf A. Weinman, the Walking Liberty Half Dollar was struck by the U.S. Mint in 12.5 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver from 1916 to 1947. It was produced at three U.S. Mints–Philadelphia, Denver, and San Francisco–with each facility using distinct mint marks–Denver and San Francisco added "D" and "S" respectively, while Philadelphia coins lack a mark. The mint mark's placement varied; from 1916-1917, it appeared on the obverse below "IN GOD WE TRUST," and from mid-1917 to 1947, it moved to the reverse beneath the olive branch. Weinman's design features Lady Liberty walking over rocky terrain, draped in an American flag, reaching towards the rising sun, symbolizing hope, and progress. The reverse showcases an American Bald Eagle perched on a rocky outcrop.
