1946-S Silver Washington Quarter BU
Low-Mintage, Key-Date 1946-S Washington Quarter
Following the end of World War II, things gradually began to return to normal in the United States as soldiers and sailors made their way home from battlefields around the world. Stan “The Man” Musial was leading the Cardinals to victory over the Boston Red Sox in the 1946 World Series, the New York Knicks defeated the Toronto Huskies in the first NBA game, Jimmy Stewart and Donna Reed starred in the classic film It’s a Wonderful Life and the U.S. granted the Philippines its independence.
Falling Mintages In A Post-War World
But changes were also afoot. While the U.S. Mint struck billions of coins since the start of the decade, production fell back in 1946. Nowhere is this more evident than with the mintage of the 1946 Silver Washington Quarter. While approximately 66.7 million Washington quarters were struck in 1946 — a relatively small sum to begin with just 4.2 million were struck at the San Francisco Mint, the second lowest mintage from 1940 until 1964 when the coin was no longer struck in 90% fine silver.
In the late 1970s when silver skyrocketed to $50 an ounce, large numbers of Washington Quarters were sacrificed to the melting pots. No one knows for sure how many 1946-S are left, but you can secure this low-mintage, key-date coin now in Brilliant Uncirculated condition. Each has been hand-picked for quality and eye appeal and will make a wonderful addition to your personal collection. Secure yours now!
