Sealed 1963 & 1964 U.S. Proof Sets with last-year Franklin and first year Kennedy Half-Dollars

Throughout the 1950s and early 1960s, the U.S. Mint issued annual Proof Sets containing  immaculate, uncirculated proof versions of five U.S. coin denominations of the day.  Each set included a proof Jefferson Nickel and Lincoln Cent struck in base metal, along with a 90% silver Washington Quarter, and a Roosevelt Dime.

In 1963, each set also included the what would become the last-year 90% silver Franklin Half-Dollar proof. In 1964, that coin was replaced with the first and only 90% silver Kennedy Half-Dollar proof ever minted for general circulation.

To protect these gleaming proof coins, the Mint sealed each Proof Set in special clear pliofilm flat packs, and sent them to collectors through the U.S. Mail in official Treasury Department manila envelopes. But 1964 would be the last year for these proof versions of circulating silver coins.

Some 50 years later, a shocking number of these historic 1963 and 1964 proof sets have been melted down for their silver content, leaving only a fraction of those originally released available today.  But we still have a few – and now you can own both sets, plus a legal tender $2 Red Seal currency note in Very Fine (VF) condition from the same era!
