From the Plains of Saskatchewan

Just like the United States Mint, the Royal Canadian Mint strikes special one-year-only commemorative silver dollars. The challenge is finding them “south of the border” in any large quantities! But we’ve managed to secure a small cache of these commemoratives from the Great White North and we’re making them available for you to add them to your collection.

One-Year-Only Coin Marks Centennial of Canada’s “Queen City”

In this offer you can secure the 1982 Canada Bison Silver Dollar that celebrated the centennial of the city of Regina, the capitol of Saskatchewan. Struck by the Royal Canadian Mint in 50% fine silver, this coin shows a large bison skull on its reverse with the Saskatchewan Parliament Building pictured between the skull’s horns. The design was chosen to represent the area’s cattle and bison-raising tradition. Regina — which is Latin for “queen” — was named after Queen Victoria. Prior to that it was referred to as the “Pile O’ Bones” for the many bones left behind by buffalo hunters.

This coin also comes in gorgeous Proof condition, a designation that means it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields. Its limited mintage of 577,959 coins may seem like a lot but due to its popularity — especially among Canadian collectors — and its milestone anniversary, obtaining one in the United States can be difficult. Fortunately, we’ve done all the work for you and you bring this coin home today simply by clicking it to your cart!
