1993-S James Madison Silver Dollar Proof Honors The Bill Of Rights
Written in 1787, ratified in 1788, and in operation since 1789, the United States Constitution is the world's longest surviving written charter of government. Future president and Founding Father James Madison wasn't satisfied with the document, however, so on June 8, 1879 as a member of the House of Representatives representing Virginia's 5th District, he stood before Congress and introduced 10 proposed amendments. These amendments would soon come to be known as the Bill of Rights. All 10 would finally be passed on December 15, 1791—a day observed as Bill of Rights Day—and earned Madison the sobriquet "Father of the Bill of Rights."
A Tribute To The Father Off The Bill Of Rights
Nearly 200 years later, the United States Mint paid tribute to these historic rights that included guarantees of speech, religion, press, assembly, and the right to petition the government. Here we have the 1993 Bill of Rights Commemorative Silver Dollar struck by the San Francisco Mint in highly pure 90% fine silver. This eye-appealing coin features a portrait of James Madison designed by William Krawczewicz on the obverse while the coin's reverse shows an image his Virginia home, Montpelier, designed by Dean McMullen. Interestingly, the designs make no reference to the Bill of Rights!
