1995-S Atlanta Olympics Basketball Half Dollar BU
1995 U.S. Olympic Basketball Commemorative Coin
Charles Barkley. Scottie Pippen. David Robinson. Reggie Miller. Karl Malone. John Stockton. Hakeem Olajuwon. Shaquille O’Neal. All on the same team! Hailed as “The Dream Team II,” the 1995 U.S. Men’s Olympic Basketball Team proved it was up to the challenge, taking the Gold Medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia.
Though none of the actual players were depicted, the U.S. Mint released this special clad half dollar coin in 1995 that celebrated the sport of basketball. The 1995 Olympic Basketball Half Dollar was part of an ambitious program issued for the XXVI Olympiad Summer Games held in Atlanta, Georgia with a total of 16 different coin designs issued over the course of the series from 1995 to 1996.
The design on this 30.6 mm legal-tender coin depicts three young basketball players competing in the Olympic Games surrounded by the inscriptions, “LIBERTY,” “XXVI 1995 OLYMPIAD” and “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The coin’s reverse design was common to the series and features the symbol for the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games in the center of a map. The inscriptions include “100,” “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “HALF DOLLAR,” “ATLANTA” and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Just 171,001 Brilliant Uncirculated (BU) versions of the coin were struck, all at the San Francisco Mint, making this a very special piece for sports collectors — especially with the Mint’s 2020 release of its curved Basketball Hall of Fame coins. If you secured one of those, pair it with the perfect companion and order one of these 1995-S Atlanta Olympics Basketball Half Dollar Coins today!
