1997 Canada $1 25th Anniversary Hockey Victory Proof

In 1972, Paul Henderson of Team Canada scored an astonishing three goals in the third period, and an additional winning goal with just 34 seconds left of the game! Team Canada won the Summit Series against Russia, and this silver dollar commemorates the 25th anniversary of that historic and momentous occasion.

This 1997 Silver Dollar is 25.175 grams of 92.5% Sterling Silver. The Obverse design features the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right. The lettering ELIZABETH II is on the side facing her portrait. D. G REGINA is on the right side of the portrait. The Reverse design depicts Paul Henderson and teammates celebrating a winning goal, with the goal net in the background. This design is based on a painting by Andre I'Archevequiue.

Considered one of the greatest hockey series ever, the Summit Series was an eight game "showdown" between hockey's two superpowers: Canada and Russia. Originally called the the Canada-U.S.S.R. series, it first aired in September 1972.
