George Washington on a $2 Note? Believe It!

Have you ever seen a $2 George Washington Note before? Well, now you have the chance to not only see it, but you can add it to your currency collection!

Coming in at #67 on the Top 100 list of United States currency notes, this note features a smaller version of the Washington portrait we all recognize from the $1 notes — though it’s been moved from the center of the note to the center-bottom, and comes flanked by allegorical figures of Mechanics and Agriculture. The note also features bold, attractive blue coloring on the denomination and seal. The back of the note displays a large amount of wide open space — a reflection of the U.S. Treasury Department’s view at the time that vacant areas on a note made them harder to counterfeit.

This 1899 $2 Silver Certificates is classified as Fr #255, a designation that refers to the numbering system in the widely used Paper Money of the United States reference book written by Arthur L. Friedberg and Ira S. Friedberg. The Fr numbers indicate varieties existing within a larger type design. This particular note has also been certified and graded by Paper Money Guaranty (PMG) as being in impressive Gem Uncirculated PMG 65 (PMG 65) Exceptional Paper Quality (EPQ) condition, with no visible evidence of restoration, tears, pinholes or other problems.

Very few of these notes exist today in any condition. This is perhaps due to the fact that they followed the popular Educational Series, which were far more likely to be hoarded. Just 431 of these $2 Washington Silver Certificates have been graded by PMG, with only 39 given a grade of PMG 65 EPQ, and just 31 graded higher.
