#22 In The Top 100—Stunning Jefferson, Battleship $2 Federal Reserve Note

This large, 7½" x 3½" "horseblanket"-size Federal Reserve Note is ranked #22 in the 100 Greatest American Currency Notes book written by renowned numismatist Q. David Bowers. It's a beautiful $2 Note, but the real story is that the reverse features the famous dreadnought fighting battleship U.S.S. New York—said to have served a propaganda-type purpose of warning European despots that America was ready to return and defend freedom in Europe if it was jeopardized again. The front of the Note features a detailed portrait of Thomas Jefferson to the left, with a Blue Seal on the right and the "Federal Reserve Bank of New York" in the middle.

Tied For The Highest Graded And Finest Known Note Of Its Kind

The notes here are tied for the highest graded and finest known as graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS), which certified them as being in Extremely Fine-40 (XF40) condition. Because these notes were heavily circulated, higher graded specimens like this are scarce. These notes have a Friedberg (FR) number of 774—corresponding to a system developed by money expert Robert Friedberg who developed a method for cataloguing U.S. notes. According to the current PCGS population report for FR774, only 9 have been submitted, which is super small, making this a scarce, coveted issue.

"The Old Lady Of The Sea"

The popularity of this note is not due just to its scarcity, but also for the beautifully engraved image of the USS New York, the lead ship in the U.S. Navy's New York Class of battleships. Commissioned in 1914, the New York was the first ship to carry the Navy's new 14-inch guns. She went on to see action in both World War I and World War II. The New York was the only American ship to sink a German U-Boat during the First World War and served in both the European and Pacific Theaters during the Second World War. She provided support to General George Patton's troops near Casablanca during the Operation Torch Invasion of North Africa in 1942, and later delivered gunfire support from 1944-1945 during the invasions of Iwo Jima and Okinawa. Classified as obsolete after the Second World War, the New York survived the nuclear weapons tests at Bikini Atoll in 1946, and was finally sunk as a target in 1948. A product of the Brooklyn shipyards, she is fondly remembered as "The Old Lady of the Sea" for her long and venerable service to her country and allies.
