Two Pieces of Civil War History

Finding paper currency from the Civil War can be quite the challenge today. Many of the notes wore out or were recalled – especially obsolete notes like those in this two-note South Carolina set. Obsolete notes are those issued prior to the existence of federal paper money printed during the Civil War. They were issued by states, banks, cities and even private companies.

Here we’ve assembled a $1 note displaying slaves working on a South Carolina dock, and a $2 note featuring a state building. Each displays its denomination in bright red, and may have been used during the Civil War! It’s fitting that both notes feature the image of John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), a fiery pro-slavery senator from South Carolina and was vice-president to both President John Quincy Adams and President Andrew Jackson.

More than any other person prior to the Civil War, Calhoun was recognized as the political and intellectual leader of the antebellum South. Unfortunately, Calhoun devoted most of his efforts to defending slavery, supporting the practice on what he claimed as moral, ethical and political grounds. In fact, some historians today believe that Calhoun’s rabid defense of slavery helped harden the resolve of Southerners against abolitionist-minded Northerners, and was a major factor in causing the Civil War.

As true mementos of America’s Civil War, this 1859-1862 South Carolina Two-Piece Civil War Currency Set is a fantastic glimpse into a time when brother fought against brother. Historians, currency collectors and Civil War aficionados will all be battling for these notes. Claim victory and order your set today!

  • IMAGES OF THE ANTEBELLUM SOUTH – The currency notes in this two-piece set are Southern through and through. Both were issued by the Bank of South Carolina. The $1 notes shows slaves loading a wagon at a wharf while to the left is the bust of John C. Calhoun (1782-1850), a fiery pro-slavery senator from South Carolina and one-time vice-president to President Andrew Jackson. To the left is a statue of Calhoun and in the extreme lower right is a Palmetto tree. The $2 note depicts a vignette of the South Carolina State House at the center. On the right is a portrait of Calhoun and on the left is a portrait of Franklin H. Elmore, who was president of the Bank of South Carolina.

  • NOTES GRADED IN VERY GOOD TO VERY FINE CONDITION – The notes in your 1859-1862 South Carolina Two-Piece Civil War Currency Set have been graded as being in Very Good to Very Fine Condition which means they may have four or more folds and possibly exhibit some soiling. However, these notes have no serious distractions and exhibit all the detail of the colorful vignettes.

  • SCARCE AND HARD-TO-FIND CIVIL WAR-ERA NOTES – While Southern states issued currency notes throughout the Civil War, these notes soon became worthless by war’s end. Once Reconstruction started, the new South Carolina government refused to cover the paper money issued by the state when it was not a part of the United States. Most of these notes were destroyed, leaving little for today’s collectors.
