About the 2001 American Silver Eagle:
In 2001 the American Eagle Bullion Program marked its 15th year. By 2001, mintages of the Silver Eagle bullion coin had grown to more than 9 million.

In addition to the 2001 Silver Eagle bullion coin, the U.S. Mint also offered the 2001 Proof Silver Eagle. It was during 2001 that the U.S. Mint moved production of the Silver Eagle proof from Philadelphia to West Point. Thus, Proof Silver Eagles minted from 2001 to the present day carry the "W" mint mark.

The obverse of the 2001 Silver Eagle features the dynamic "Walking Liberty" image by 20th century American sculptor Adolph A. Weinman. Wearing a flowing gown and cape spangled with stars, Liberty is depicted striding boldly toward a rising sun, symbolizing America's optimism for the future.

On the reverse face of 2001 Silver Eagle coins is an image by contemporary artist, John Mercanti, Chief Engraver at the U.S. Mint. The design is based on the Great Seal of the United States and features a bald eagle in a formal heraldic pose, its breast protected by a shield. In its talons are a sheaf of arrows and an olive branch, and in its beak is a banner inscribed with "E PLURIBUS UNUM"—"Out of many, one."

Silver Eagles are a uniquely American coin. As the official silver bullion of the United States, American Silver Eagles are considered legal tender and may be deposited into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). They are the only silver coins whose weight, content and purity are guaranteed by the Government of the United States.

The overall average price of silver during 2001 was $4.37 per ounce.
