Back-Dated Silver Eagles From The Famous Murel Hoard

Unless you’re new to the coin-collecting hobby or you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, perhaps you haven’t heard that in 2021 the United States Mint’s changed the reverse design of its One-Ounce Silver Eagles. That’s right, the beloved design that has graced the world’s most popular silver coin since its debut in 1986 has undergone a facelift that has turned the numismatic world on its head, creating a demand for back-dated Silver Eagles. But where to find these older coins? For many it’s through the discovery of a hoard such as this one found recently tucked away inside a wall that was hidden in the back of a bedroom closet.

A Fortune In Silver Coins Hidden Inside A Wall

Typical of hoarders of his age, the owner of the hoard — a Mr. Murel — had an all-consuming distrust of banks. So, instead of storing his wealth in secure safe-deposit boxes, he continued to add to his coin stacks by removing a few boards from a wall in his bedroom closet where he ultimately stashed away around 9,000 Silver Eagles along with another $22,000 in silver coins that he had been accumulating since the 1960s. The Silver Eagles were all from 14 monster boxes of 2002 Silver Eagles and 4 monster boxes of 2003 Silver Eagles. The discovery of his large hoard was discovered by his family following his death in 2020. They were absolutely flabbergasted when they came upon the secret vault with its boxes of coins stacked from floor to ceiling.

Near-Flawless Back-Dated Silver Eagles With A Special NGC Pedigree

Not only did we manage to get our hands on these coins, but we submitted the best coins from the hoard to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) for grading certification. When the coins came back we pleasantly surprised with the high grade, the best of which came back in near-perfect Superb Gem Uncirculated Mint State-69 (MS69) condition, a distinction that means these almost-flawless coins showcase impressive full strike and indistinguishable imperfections — well above and beyond the quality of the vast majority of coins in the series!

This is truly a remarkable grade when you consider that a perfect Mint State-70 grade is an extremely difficult grade to earn for 2002 and 2003 Silver Eagles. In fact, out of the 7,000 coins from 2002, only 263 pieces came back graded in MS69 condition and out of the 2,000 coins from 2003, only 18 pieces came back in the same high grade! To further pinpoint the origin of these spectacular coins, NGC encapsulated them in acrylic labels with an exclusive “Murel Hoard” pedigree label.
