Scarce Extra "High Leaf" Wisconsin Error Quarter
The U.S. Mint issued 34.3 billion coins as part of its States Quarters series that ran from 1999 through 2008–and among them was the 2004 Wisconsin Quarter. Symbolic of the Dairy States, the coin features a cow, an ear of corn, a wheel of cheese, and the state motto, "FORWARD." Many of these coins have been slipped into vending machines, rattle in cash registers, and clanked around in the pockets of people after purchasing a snack at a local convenience store. But unbeknownst to most people is the existence of a scarce Wisconsin error coin in which an extra leaf was added just to the bottom-left side of the corn cob.

How did this error–officially categorized as a misrouted die variety–actually occur? Some speculate that a worker at the Denver mint may have added the additional leaf to a die using a hand punch prior to actual use on the coin dies. Other theories suggest that metal shavings found their way into the die and created a gouge during the production of those coins. Whatever happened, these coins are exceptional with one High Leaf 2004-D Wisconsin Quarter selling for more than $2,500 in 2006–among the highest 2004 Wisconsin quarter sales on record!
