2004-P 1 Dollar Silver Lewis and Clark Proof NGC PF69 Smithsonian Coin Classics
Lewis and Clark Collection
Not long after the Louisiana Purchase, President Thomas Jefferson commissioned a lengthy journey to the Pacific coast, that began in 1804 and lasted two years. With a mission to map the land west of the Mississippi, Lewis and Clark set off to gather useful information and discover a water route that could facilitate commerce and trade. Lewis and Clark's often-perilous two-year journey of more than 8,000 miles paved the way for westward expansion. The explorers returned with a wealth of discoveries. Among them were observation records of topography and geology of the land. They also produced 140 maps, documented more than 170 plants, and along with 100 different animal species.
This Lewis and Clark Bicentennial Silver Dollar was struck to mark the 200th anniversary of Lewis and Clark's heroic expedition to the Pacific Ocean and back. It honors the expedition that forever changed the United States and celebrates Lewis and Clark's significant contribution in establishing early relations with the American Indians. The reverse was inspired by the original peace medals first designed in 1801 by the U.S. Mint. They were presented to Native American chiefs on behalf of President Jefferson as gestures of goodwill. Each 2004 Lewis and Clark Silver Dollar comes in Proof-69 (PF69) condition graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC). There's no better way to "own a piece of history" from America's storied past.
